How fuel pump work?

The fuel pump located in the fuel tank works to transfer fuel from the tank to the engine, by generating pressure capable of transferring it to the engine through the hoses quickly and in the right amount, and when the engine is running, the pump works with it in a continuous movement to pump fuel until the engine is stopped.

The most common reason for the fuel pump to be damaged or stop working is the dirt that is inside the tank, or due to overheating, corrosion and damage over time, so if you want to preserve the life of the fuel pump in your car, you must use good quality fuel, and do not let the tank be permanently empty of fuel, but refill it as soon as the warning light shows you that the tank is about to run out of fuel.

But you should know that no matter how much you try to maintain the fuel pump in your car, it will not last forever, and it will be exposed to damage, corrosion, and complete failure, so if you notice any issues related to the fuel pump, you should take the car to a mechanic to check it and identify the issue.

Fuel pump issues

The most common fuel pump issues you may encounter in your car are:

Loud noise in the fuel tank

A damaged fuel pump may make a loud whining sound that you will hear from the fuel tank while sitting in your car or even outside, and some pumps may whine when the tank runs out of fuel or when the fuel is slightly contaminated, but if it is too loud, it indicates an issue with it that you must solve immediately.

Fuel odor inside and outside the car

One of the fuel pump issues that you can quickly detect is the appearance of a fuel smell inside the car; because the fuel pump is inside, specifically under the rear seats in most cars, and you can also smell the smell of fuel outside the car from the rear wheels, which may indicate an issue with the pump.

Reduced fuel efficiency

A damaged fuel pump contributes to pumping more fuel to the engine, and this means increased fuel consumption, and the older the car, the more fuel consumption, but you should know that increased fuel consumption has many reasons that have nothing to do with the fuel pump, so try to identify the issue mainly to know where the fault is.

Slow acceleration

If you step on the fuel pedal and notice that the acceleration is a bit slow, it may be due to the failure of the fuel pump, when the pump is unable to provide the necessary amount of fuel, the car may have difficulty accelerating as it should in normal mode.

Difficulty starting the engine

It is obvious that if the fuel pump is unable to pump fuel from the tank to the engine, you will definitely have difficulty starting the engine, because it lacks the required amount of fuel for the combustion process to work, and the engine may work after several attempts or it may not work at all.

Engine vibration

A damaged or nearly damaged fuel pump may cause the engine to vibrate due to the lack of fuel that reaches it, sometimes it is normal and other times it is a guest and does not have enough power to move the car, and the vibration you will notice as the speed of the car increases, but do not confuse it with the tire balance, it also causes vibrations in the tires.

Engine stalls

When the engine is running, the fuel pump works with it all the time to feed it with fuel, but if the pump is damaged or clogged, the supply of fuel to the engine will stop or decrease so much that the engine will stop working completely, and this may happen to you while driving the car, so always be attentive.

Sudden increase in engine power

While a damaged or clogged pump will reduce the amount of fuel pumped into the engine, it can sometimes result in a higher than normal amount of fuel being pumped into the engine, causing the engine to suddenly increase in power as a result of the extra fuel entering the engine through the sprays.

Engine overheating

One of the signs of a fuel pump failure is an overheated engine. If you notice a high engine temperature indicator in the dashboard, this may mean that there is an issue with the pump; because the lack of fuel will create a lot of pressure on the engine and may cause it to overheat.
