EV Mode

EV mode, which stands for Electric Vehicle, is a mode designed for electric driving and is available in standard hybrid vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles, whose batteries are charged via an external charging port, similar to fully electric vehicles.

When activated, EV mode changes several settings in the vehicle so that it runs solely on electric power drawn from the vehicle’s main battery or hybrid battery, allowing the car to operate exclusively on electric power.

It shuts off the gas engine and drives the wheels using an electric motor or motors powered by the battery. This saves fuel and allows the car to travel a long distance (varying by model) on electricity alone, without relying on the gas engine.

How does the EV mode work in a car?

The mechanism of the EV mode varies between car manufacturers and models, particularly regarding how the gas engine and the electric motor(s) operate, when they are activated, and when they are deactivated; however, they generally share the same principle.

When you select electric driving mode using the dedicated button—usually labeled “EV”—most cars shut off the gas engine and activate the electric motor. This helps save fuel and extends the life of the gas engine, as it runs less frequently than in conventional vehicles.

The electric motor draws its power from energy previously stored in the battery, enabling it to drive the wheels and move the car without relying on the gas engine; however, when the car is under a certain load or exceeds a certain speed, the gas engine will restart and then shut off again.

While driving, hybrid and electric vehicles are equipped with a regenerative braking system, which recovers energy generated during braking and returns it to the battery for later use in electric mode. This system activates when you lift your foot off the accelerator and when you press the brake pedal.

This advanced system helps increase the driving range of hybrid cars because it supplies the battery with regenerative energy throughout the trip, so the engine can use it when needed—especially when switching to electric mode, particularly in plug-in hybrid vehicles.

When should you use EV mode?

The uses of EV mode are numerous and important, as follows:

On short trips

Short trips and driving specific distances are ideal for activating this mode, as it allows the car to run on electric power, saving fuel and extending the engine’s lifespan. It’s also suitable because it doesn’t consume much battery power, enabling you to take longer trips throughout the day.

When driving in the city

City streets are known for heavy traffic and frequent, annoying stops. This is where EV mode comes in, allowing the car to run on electricity alone and reducing fuel consumption as well. Additionally, electricity consumption in the city is lower than when driving on highways, making it ideal under these conditions.

In certain areas

There are certain areas where driving on electric power alone is preferable to gas, such as residential areas, speed-restricted zones, and areas with many schools and pedestrians. This helps reduce noise and minimize exhaust emissions from the gas engine, in addition to effectively reducing fuel consumption.
